Las oberturas para tres chalumeaux de Christoph Graupner: análisis textual, organológico y performativoThis research work is aimed at Christoph Graupner's Ouvertures GWV 401 and 443 written for a consort of three chalumeaux. One of a kind, these dance suites occupy a unique place in Baroque chamber music for wind instruments. In the present study, these works are brought into focus and are subjected to a deep analysis from various perspectives. In the first part of the work there is a study of the biographical, socioeconomic and cultural context of the author and his times. This reveals his first years of training, and his decisive stage as a student at the Tomasschule in Leipzig with the Professors Schelle and Kuhnau (a stage in which he became acquainted, and became friends, with a number of musicians who would later be transcendent in his life and professional career, as in the case of Grünewald or Telemann). Maybe, as I point out in this thesis by way of a hypothesis, that it was possibly during these student years in Leipzig that he first became aware of the delicate wind instrument to which this present writing is largely dedicated: the chalumeau. Graupner's crucially important professional journey, from Hamburg to Darmstadt (where he would spend his last days) is set out in detail. Following this, the compositional work of Graupner is analyzed; the influences, style, instrumental colour, his relationship with other musicians (in particular with his teachers Schelle and Kuhnau, as well as Telemann), and the presence of the chalumeau in his works. Another of the purposes of this work is the study of the scores of the Ouvertures and its critical, philological and musical analysis; the study by way of replicas of the consort's chalumeaux (alto, tenor and bass), from the organological point of view and historically informed interpretive perspective....the second chapter delves precisely into this organological question; a context of the instrument and a review of its most significant technical aspects are shared (with aspects that will be expanded when applied to the repertoire under analysis in the thesis, in the subsequent pages). Following this, this writing focuses on the compositions themselves; the musical writing, the available editions and recordings, as well as an analysis of the Ouvertures in their stylistic context and of the musical reception. With all of the above covered, the following chapter focuses on the development of a critical edition of the two works. This edition, with the corresponding critical manuscripts, serves as the basis for the elaboration of an interpretive guide to Ouvertures GWV 401 and 443, which is the true objective of this work. This interpretive guide is framed within the conceptual framework of applied musicology, which in recent years is having great academic significance in fields such as management, reception, interpretation, criticism and others. It is for this that in this work I will name it as "analysis applied to musical interpretation", to provide it with a differentiated profile than in terms of historically informed performance. In this guide, the organological aspects most directly related to the praxis of the works are analyzed in detail (embouchure, articulation, special fingerings, tuning, etc.) are offered to the recipient of the guide (which aspires to have a practical character for the scholar and performer interested in this repertoire) with some important considerations on aspects such as formal structure, phrasing, interpreting the dotted rhythms, inégal notes, ornaments and others - related to the praxis of the works. By continuation, and as an extensive conclusion, the results of the musical analysis applied to the interpretation of the works are offered; in this presentation, and through numerous musical examples, the well-founded interpretive decisions and the proposed musical achievements are shown. These realizations do not have in any case - and as it cannot be otherwise - a mandatory character. They intend to show paths or definitive interpretive solutions, rather than an unequivocal arrival, a method of performance exploration (in short, a model of musical analysis applied to interpretation); one that places greater emphasis on the idea of the search for the aesthetic concept of a work (the image of sonority) as a primary source for making informed interpretive decisions.
